I heard this quote for the first time today. It was in the context of a very sad event, but was quoted with the intention of finding the joy and redeeming value in a difficult and sorrowful situation. I kept deliberately turning the words over in my mind and then unconsciously coming back to them time and again. I thought I’d share the quote here in hopes that you can find some meaning in it if you need/want to today.
The words seem to come from a Japanese book called The Teaching of Buddha, according to FakeBuddhaQuotes. The text from that book reads in full:
“An act to make another happy, inspires the other to make still another happy, and so happiness is aroused and abounds. Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the single candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. Those who seek Enlightenment must be careful of each of their steps. No matter how high one’s aspiration may be, it must be attained step by step. The steps of the path to Enlightenment must be taken in our everyday life.”
